Rain and Lightning Struck at Notre Dame

Saturday, October 3, 2009 by Peter Marr
The team that beat USC and then were killed by Stanford, is now leading Notre Dame with the recovery and running in of a backward pass.  The rain is making it tough to play, but the lightning strike by Washington put ND on their heels.

Lightening Strikes Again - This time it is ND.  Clausen to Golden Tate for 67 yards has now put ND back ahead.  Golden Tate broke a tackle by two converging Huskies and ran most of the 67 yards for the TD.

The University of Washington bookstore probably is struggling to decide how much University of Washington merchandise to stock this year.  First they beat the #1 ranked team, USC - get more stuff, lots more stuff.  Then they lose to Stanford, cancel the orders -- quickly!  Now they can't decide whether they will beat ND or not.

It looks like Stanford is looking to come back.  A pass slipped through ND's Butler's hands into a Huskie's.  Only 35 yards away.  Oops, Washington fumbles and ND has it back.  Now this is a real back and forth game.  Rain always makes these game more interesting.

Washington has one more chance before the half.  Jake Locker and the Huskies need to get about 40 yards to get a field goal.  They just got 30 --- then another 25.  Now they are in field goal position.  They have a chance to go into the clubhouse with the lead.

Washington 17 --- Notre Dame 16 at half.

Those Darned Demon Dekes are Wake'n up

Thursday, October 1, 2009 by Jim F.

You won't find this little known fact on any shirt or towel at The Wake Forest University Bookstore,  But those doggoned Demon Deacons have finally moved out of the cellar in NCAA Division I football.  For a century, the worst record in history, they have figured out how to win enough games in recent years to move ahead of Kent State and Idaho.  Hoo Hah!!!  With 404 wins in 1,023 games, their .411 record is now better than .387 and .393 by these other 2 power houses.  Of course these other 2 play in the MAC and the WAC, and have only played 800 games, so if one considers only major conferences or teams playing over 100 years, Wake Forest still owns the crown!

Maybe their win streak over the last few years can be attributed to a recent rather lame celebration after a big win, where they roll the quad with toilet paper covering the trees. Don't know why or when that started.  At any rate, last year's team became the winningest senior class in Wake Forest football history.  The 16 Deac seniors finished with a 32-19 record, three bowl appearances, and the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference championship!  They also whipped up on Navy in the inaugural Eagle Bank Bowl to finish it up, with a 29-19 comeback win.

Wake actually had one of their linebackers last year ( Aaron Curry ) picked #4 in the 2008 NFL Draft by Seattle.  He's doing okay for them so far, with 22 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble through the first 4 Seahawk games.  Who knew???

At 3-2 this season, following last weekend's gritty win over NC State, Wake may finally be getting it figured out.  QB Riley Skinner tossed his 45th TD pass in the 4th quarter, setting a new team career record, and leading the Dekes to a 30-24 victory.  After the prior weekend's heartbreaking overtime loss up at Boston College, they needed this one.  With another home game coming up against Maryland, they could get it rockin' in the ACC.  After non-conference wins over Stanford ( a thrilling second half comeback - in the first meeting ever between these 2 schools ) and Elon ( who??? ), the season may have hope.
Well. before you head out to BB&T stadium this weekend to help kick some Terrapin tail ( against a team called the Terps, with a Turtle named Testudo for a mascot, how can you lose??? ),  grab some rockin demon logo stuff for the game at this nifty site

You can pick up some nice Demon Deke banners and flags, or choose from a wide variety of mats for your car, game room, tailgater, or even your bath room.  They also have rear window logo art and hitch covers for your weekend ride.  So if you are looking for some great Wake stuff that you haven't found at the Wake Forest University Bookstore or your favorite Wal Mart, give this site a look.

They even have a nice selection of University of Maryland merchandise or Terp Gear if you need some target practice.  Ouch!

Stanford Football continues to frustrate

Monday, September 14, 2009 by Jim F.
I was excited to see Stanford jump out to a big lead in the first half in their first game ever against the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest.  But as they so often do, the team forgot to come out for the second half and lost right at the end.
From my early days as a college football enthusiast growing up in the Bay Area, I have always been a fan.  My first college football game actually was at Stanford Stadium in 1959, watching Dick Norman and Skip Face manhandle the College of the Pacific 21-6.  Their offense that year was awesome, racking up more points and yards than anyone.  Face scored 100 points that year, second in the nation.  Norman led the NCAA in passing offense.  But, of course, their defense couldn't hold anybody, and they only won a couple games.  Both guys returned in 1960 for what SHOULD have been an awesome year, but the Indians ( they didn't become the Cardinal for several years ) lost EVERY game.

I still find a way to root for them no matter what - I mean here's a school that has given the NFL such stars as John Elway, Jimmy Plunkett, and John Brodie to name a few.  Also THE best coach, Bill Walsh.  It's good to know there are web stores out there for those of us still rooting for the Cardinal ( named after the team color, by the way, not the bird.... ).  If you don't live close to campus anymore and can't get to the old Stanford University Bookstore to buy team stuff, check out logoproducts4less.com.  It's a great place to get some good deals on Stanford University merchandise, from license plates and frames to team floor mats.  And keep on rootin' on those Cardinals - who knows?  Maybe they'll figure it all out yet!
