For all of those wondering, the cute fellow here is the Sun Devil. His name is Sparky, and he is the official mascot for Arizona State University. Mister Sun Devil has held his title since 1946, when he replaced the Normals, the Owls, and the Bull Doggies. It took a news reporter to come up with the moniker, and a former Disney animator to create the look. I am not sure if Moses would be glad we are not worshipping a Sun God in the heat of AZ, or disgusted that we bow down to a Devil of any kind. I guess SUN makes sense to me and a reference to Hell whose temperatures probably match that of the Arizona summer does too. Still pretty hokey, although I'm sure the football team was happy to be anything other than a Normal. Ooofff...If you are somehow a fan of the Devil, check out LogoProducts4Less.com for some hot Arizona State stuff, many featuring Senor Sparky himself! They have a good collection of logo merchandise for the ASU faithful, including:
- License Plates & Frames
- Light Switch Covers
- Sun Devil Only parking signs
- Floor Mats for your car and home
- Hitch Covers
- Decals, window graphics, and much much more
After Gene Autry crooned, "you are my Sunshine...",
Geraldine proclaimed, "the Devil made me do it...",
and what had been Normal was history.
Like Jerry Reed said, "when you're hot, you're hot.."
