During a recent long weekend in northwestern Lower Michigan ( that would be where your pinkie joint is on your right palm ), we were cruising through Traverse City on Sunday. We came across a whole line of Christian protestors with signs and placards about Abortion and the Devil. As they were all dressed in their Sunday Best, one can only assume they had gathered after church to preach to the rest of us as we drove through town. While I will not be giving any personal opinions on abortion itself, I do believe that it is an extremely sensitive issue that people in crisis are trying to deal with. To me, if a woman is even considering an abortion, she is dealing with a baby she does not want. Now whether this woman is an unmarried teenager, a older woman concerned about caring for an infant at this stage of her life, a young married woman who is not in financial shape to afford a baby, a woman who has had forced or coerced relations, or any of a number of highly troubling issues, she is truly in crisis. The last thing such a woman ( and her husband or significant other perhaps ) needs is a bunch of self righteous do-gooders ranting about the evils of abortion. What she does need are alternatives and solutions. What she does need is a friend who can counsel her. What she does need is love and kindness. What she does need are avenues she can pursue to help her deal with her dilemna and another way out.
I struggle with self righteous bigots standing on their personal pulpits telling us what is right and what is wrong. Telling us what God wants us to do. Trying to force their personal beliefs and vendettas on us. I cannot help but wonder what Jesus WOULD do about this. I cannot help but wonder how he would have dealt with these mothers in crisis. I seriously doubt he would have climbed up on the highest rock and yelled at them. I doubt he would have used God to try to scare them. What I do believe he would have done was to have calmly talked to them. He would have quietly helped them find alternatives. He would probably have encouraged them not to pursue abortion. But he would have done it with a helping hand.
Not one of the signs in TC last weekend posed an answer, a direction, a phone number or an address or a website. It was the mad group with the golden calf awaiting Moses' return from the mountain top. It was the mad group at the cross. It was the mad group having risen from their recliners to condemn. While they all offer their rants in a Christian package, it is most certainly anything but Christian.
