When trying to figure out what to put on the Philadelphia Flyers merchandise, it was first necessary to come up with a name.
Sometimes in a contest it doesn't depend on the rules, instead it depends on the ruler. So seems to be the case with the Philadelphia Flyers. It seems that a contest was held to
name the new Philly hockey team. During a brainstorming session with the owners, management and family, the name "fliers" came up. They talked about how the hockey players flew around the rink. Phyllis Snider got credit for thinking of the name. Unfortunately for her, there WAS actually a contest going on. A 9 year old boy named Alec Stockard and a number of others submitted Fliers. In order to be fair and have a proper crowning of the new name, they gave public credit and a reward to little Alec. No one knows how the name was changed to Flyers.
