This cartoon seems to never get stale. It reincarnates every generation. Scooby started off as a minor character when Fred Silverman pitched the show to Hanna-Barbera, the animation studio. CBS rejected this show even though it was offer with such great names as Mystery Five or Who's Scared?.
On the way home from the rejection, Silverman heard the Frank Sinatra song "Strangers in the Night". The verse that goes, "Scooby dooby doo ...." clicked with Silverman.
He made Scooby and Shaggy the lead characters. Basing Shaggy after Dobie Gillis beatnik hippie character, Maynard G. Krebs. This combo was perfect.
Over the past four decades, Scooby Doo stuff has been unending. We have very type of Scooby Doo merchandise you can think of in all of the stores. Kids clothing, luch boxes and much more. Scooby mania didn't stop there. As the little Scooby lovers had children, they stepped up to buy Scooby Doo merchandise for them. Things like car accessories, clocks, decals, floor mats, bobble head dolls and any other place you could think of putting a Scooby image.
During the last 40 years there have been 10 TV series (11th coming out this year), 2 live movies, 7 TV specials, 13 direct to DVD/VHS releases and tons of Scooby merchandise.
