Are the Atlanta Falcons still around the NFL?

With mostly home wins against the lowly likes of the Dolphins, 49ers, Panthers, and Bears ( oh my ), this is a team with something still to prove.  Getting spanked by the Patriots a couple weeks ago, and actually losing to the absolutely awful Detroit Lions during the pre-season, doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy about the old Falcones.  Certainly named after one of Ford's many loser cars, they are not much better to look at.  With a showdown with the Cowboys at Dallas this weekend, we shall see what exactly the boys are made of.

TO stands for TAKE OFF you are making me sick!

It's official now -- I have dumped my Philadelphia Eagles stuff, my Dallas Cowboys stuff, my
San Francisco 49ers merchandise and now my Buffalo Bills stuff.  All because of Terrell Owens.  This guy and his $100,000+ earrings drives me crazy.  He whine and cries about being misunderstood while dropping the big pass.  Over and over again he steadily produces less while talking more.  He thinks that for some reason he knows what every ball team needs, including pointing out the the Bills need a dome. 

Everywhere he goes, there is great hope he will shine.  This is always followed by lack of success and the ultimate blaming of the media for his problems.  At 35, we have the consolation that it won't be long before he is out of the league and we will forget him.  Hopefully, he doesn't find a way to keep his name or, worse yet, his face in front of us after his playing days are over.

Since when is a Lottery not gambling????

Pete Rose can't get into the Hall of Fame.  The Black Sox have been marked as cheaters forever.  Referees spend time in jail for throwing a game.  You would think with all of this, the major sports teams would want to keep gambling as far away from the venue as possible.  Not lottery gambling ----

The lineup of Dallas Cowboys merchandise now includes lottery tickets.  The Texas Lottery Commission paid $1.15 million to the Cowboys for branding these tickets and helping them sell 12 million of them.  The Houston Texans are getting $262,500 for their 5 million tickets.  This isn't just a Texas thing.  Included in the Green Bay Packers accessories are lottery tickets that will make the team $467,000.  A total of 14 NFL franchises have inked deals to sponsor lottery tickets this fall. 

There is a risk for these NFL teams and all of the items they sell with their logos.  When they start sponsoring gambling or alcohol, they risk losing other sponsors.  It is important to many big time consumer packaged goods advertisers to only associate their name with wholesome, family value events.


What do you think about sports teams sponsoring lotteries?  Does it teach children a bad lesson?  Is it any different than advertising the lottery on TV or the Internet?

Pittsburgh Steelers Merchandise wins the Fan's Pocketbook Bowl

I know all of you are thinking about your fantasy teams.  You are reading all the blogs about who's hot and who's not.  Every week you have your favorite Power Ranking based upon who thinks your team is the best.  We are all looking for someone to validate our own thoughts. 

For those of us who sell NFL merchandise, the wins and losses don't matter.  All we care about is whose jersey or hat is the hottest.  So far this year it goes as follows:
  1. Pittsburgh Steelers Merchandise
  2. Chicago Bears Merchandise
  3. Dallas Cowboys Merchandise
  4. New England Patriots Merchandise
  5. Philadelphia Eagles Merchandise
Yes, fans, these are the best and the brightest in my book.  All I want to know is which Pittsburgh Steelers decal or which Pittsburgh Steelers ornaments are going to sell this Fall.  If I knew that I would be able to fill every order quickly and efficiently.  Unfortunately, I am at the mercy of an injured quarterback or an old quarterback who is on a hot streak.  If the Arizona Cardinals get hot with the fans, there is nothing we can do to get more Arizona Cardinals merchandise.  I only have what I have. 

Each year before the season begins we have to guess which teams will be hot.  The Bears, Patriots and Packers will always have a loyal following.  But there will be a surprise.  There is one very year.  We will have to quickly call our manufacturers to see if they can get us more flags, ornaments, decals or floor mats.  Maybe they will come in before the shine of the underdog gets tarnished.

For those of you whose team was not mentioned, the next five are as follows:

Do I have a guess on who the underdog will be this year? Nope!  I never guess because I always guess these things wrong.  That is the same reason I don't play fantasy football.  The only year I played I came in 7th place in my league.  That wasn't good enough to encourage me to spend more time trying to get better.  Instead what I do now is exactly what I have done for the past 45 years -- watch my Bears, cheer for my Bears and curse when my Bears don't live up to my exalted expectations.
