We all know the Boston Bruins were the first US based expansion team in the NHL.  As I looked up what a Bruin was, I also learned that the team colors - brown and yellow - were the colors of the grocery stores owned by the founder of the Bruins, Charles Adams. 

Now back to a Bruin.  Adams told the first general manager, Art Ross, to name the team after an untamed animal with speed, agility and cunning.  Ross came up with the idea of a bear.  A Bruin is an old English word for bear.  You can find it in many old English folktales.  It also probably is a derivative of the German word for brown, braun.  I would imagine that the English word for strength, brawn, is also in this lineage as people related the brown bear to strength. 

In Wikipedia, they claim that the word entered the English language from the English translation of the Dutch story, Reynard the Fox.  The bear in the story was named Bruin.  This could lead you to the idea that the name comes directly from the Dutch word for brown - bruin.  There is a possibility that Adams traded with Dutch exporters for his stores and one of them helped him think of this name.  The Dutch traders were very common to find in New England in the early 20th century when this name was developed.
