While I will be the last one to acknowledge any of Barry's home run accomplishments, Old Hammerin Hank certainly had his own special advantages. Unlike Babe, Mickey, and Willie, Aaron only had to swat a line drive a little over 300 feet to get it out of the Braves ballparks in Milwaukee and Atlanta. Fulton Stadium was built specially to accommodate Hank's range. Ruth and Mantle had to knock the ball over 400 feet to clear the fences where they hit, which the routinely could do. Mays played his early career at the Polo Grounds, which virtually had no fence, as they were well over 450 feet from home plate. Playing the majority of his home games at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, Mays had to hit into a constant 50 mph wind, blowing in from left field. While I'm not sure WHO the builders of this atrocity had in mind when they drew up the plans, it certainly was NOT the Say Hey Kid. It was estimated he lost over 150 homers during his career there, because of the wind. The fun thing about these 4 home run greats is they did it all without steroids. And Babe, Mick, and Willie hit some of the longest home runs ever. Barry and Hank could hit the ball hard on their own power. Both also have had the blessing of long, long careers that aided their records a lot. Sadly, injuries and personal health problems cut short those of Ruth, Mantle, and Mays, leaving the door wide open for these other "wanna-bees".

Gary Grimes of San Diego has started riding around on his white Honda Goldwing with a "Be Polite" sign on it. His hope is that this will grab the other driver's attention and get them to drive in a more safety conscious way. It seems people mistake him for a CHIP bike cop. They wave at him and give him the thumbs up.
Since almost all Harley drivers are already polite, this sign is obviously for the car drivers. Everyday Harley riders must deal with the impolite actions of the car and truck drivers. Actually, it is needed when you watch the political debates today.
Maybe the NFL should adopt this logo. I can see it plastered over the helmets of the players. Who knows, that might cause a drop in unsportsmanlike conduct. The MLB could require all pitchers to put Be Polite on the front of their jerseys. That way when they bean someone, the batter could see these words before charging the mound. I can see Atlanta Braves decals with a Be Polite on the feathers of their brave.

A good question for everyone is whether it is more likely for a car driver, truck driver or a motorcycle rider to be polite.
Baseball tryouts - Football tryouts - now there is a combine where teams can check out who is the best ticket salesperson. In the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette there was an article about a group of sport ticket salesperson wannabes. Outside of PNC park they taped a group of prospective salespeople trying to interact with the crowd and sell tickets. These videos were reviewed by the Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Rangers, Charlotte Bobcats, Georgia Tech, Chicago Fire, Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers. Instead of just reading a resume, these teams were able to see the sales people in action.
One person indicated that they always look for people wearing Pittsburgh Pirates merchandise. Another one said they avoided the people wearing St. Louis Cardinals merchandise. All of them tried to gain the confidence of the fans and use their best selling skills. They looked them in the eye. They listened more than they talked. Before heading into the crowd, everyone got a training lesson. Hopefully, this helped because the event cost the prospects $395 per person.
I can see it now. In addition to the telephone sales people selling us season and single game tickets, the roving salesperson will carry Pittsburgh Pirates merchandise in a backpack that they can whip out for an other sale. There will even be in the stands along with the hot dog salesman, beer man and peanut vendor, a guy or gal selling Atlanta Braves stuff while we sit in our seats. I can't wait. All I can say is that they should stay out of line of site. It would really irritate me if I paid a telephone sales person, bought a hot dog, beer and bag of peanuts and the Chicago Bulls merchandise salesperson was letting someone try on shirt between me and the the next slam dunk. It wouldn't be pretty.
